Beta-reader sign ups!

Most people will already have their own beta reader, but hey, maybe they want to try someone new. A beta reader is a person who reads another person's written work with a critical eye, with the aim of improving grammar, spelling, characterization, and general style of a story before the author posts it up. All participants must get their fiction beta’d by at least one person.

Beta volunteer: Can we get some lovely volunteers to help our writers out? Betas are love, so comment below with the following text! Comments are unscreened.

Need a beta: If you are in need of a beta, then drop a note or just directly contact someone that volunteers below by replying to their comments.

Preferred Fandoms/Pairings: I'm a crazy multi-shipper, so if I list a fandom here but don't list the particular ship you're looking for, I'll most likely still be willing to read for you!
Doctor Who (Doctor/Rose, Doctor/Donna, Amy/Rory - only familiar with new!Who)
Nikita (Nikita/Michael, Alex/everyone but Michael lol)
Fringe (Peter/Olivia, Olivia/Lincoln, AltLivia/Lincoln or altLincoln
Revenge (Emily/anyone)
Lost (Sawyer/Juliet, Sawyer/Kate)
Sherlock Holmes (RDJ movie version, Holmes/Adler)
I love all these sitcoms and ship so many people I'll just list them: Happy Endings, 30 Rock, Parks and Recreation, Community, Suburgatory, Cougar Town, Miranda, New Girl
YA Books (and their movies, if they exist): The Hunger Games (Katniss/Peeta), Divergent, The Maze Runner, Gone, something you rec to me. :)
Is there any type of fiction you would prefer to avoid beta'ing? Noncon, dubcon, incest, RPF. I'm also not a fan of crossovers.
What are your strengths as a beta reader? I teach freshman comp, so yeah...I got this. But really, I'm good with the grammar aspects, and I'm a writer myself (though I'm too much of a chicken to sign up for something like this -- plus, I love reading other people's fics every year!) so I'm perfectly willing to talk to you about the actual writing process. I'm cool with the "do you think this character would actually say this?" type of questions as well as the "do I need a comma right here?" questions. I'd also be up for tossing around ideas via email or IM while you are in the process.
What kind of turn around time can someone expect from you? Let's say two weeks. More likely I would be able to get it back in under a week, honestly, but because I'm not sure what my work load will be around the time I'd get a manuscript, I don't want to promise and not deliver. Of course, individual sections/smaller pieces that you'd like to send throughout the process will take considerably less time.

Preferred Fandoms/Pairings:
So I am a HUGE multi-shipper, and I watch a ridiculous amount of tv. I'm pretty much willing to beta anything, but I'll list some of my major shows/ships.
Castle (Castle/Beckett), Community (Jeff/Annie), Criminal Minds (Hotch/Prentiss), Doctor Who/Torchwood (10/Rose, 11/Rose, 12/River, anything on Torchwood), Grey's Anatomy/Private Practice (anything), How I Met Your Mother (mostly Barney/Robin), Santuary (mostly Helen/Will), Stargate (all of them plus movies - major ship is Jack/Sam). As for anything else, because this barely scratches the surface, if it's on ScyFy, a medical show, or a cop show, I probably watch or have watched it.
Is there any type of fiction you would prefer to avoid beta'ing? I'll do pretty much anything except non/dubcon.
What are your strengths as a beta reader? Grammar, flow, sentence structure, characterization, and general cheerleading.
What kind of turn around time can someone expect from you? On average I'd say about 2-3 days, but a week at the most.

Preferred Fandoms/Pairings: The main fandoms and pairings I'm most confident in betaing listed below. However, if you would like a different het pairing that I haven't listed I'm cool with that too!
Fullmetal Alchemist: Roy/Riza, Edward/Winry
Pokemon: Ash/Misty, Silver/Lyra
Castle: Castle/Beckett
Homestuck: John/Rose, Sollux/Aradia, Dave/Terezi
Is there any type of fiction you would prefer to avoid beta'ing? Incest, dubcon/noncon
What are your strengths as a beta reader? Plot, sentence flow, characterization
What kind of turn around time can someone expect from you? Depends how much of your work you give me, but a chapter by chapter basis around two or three days.

Is there any type of fiction you would prefer to avoid beta'ing? Non-canon pairings in general, babyfic, cross-overs, major character death, super-graphic torture.
What are your strengths as a beta reader? Grammar, sentence flow, characterization, and fact-checking.
What kind of turn around time can someone expect from you? 2 weeks for something this big in total, 4-5 days chapter by chapter.

Hey, would you be willing to do a lightening fast beta for my Haven fic? It's the Little Bang so it comes in right around 10,000 words. It's mostly Nathan/Audrey with some one-sided Audrey/Duke UST. I should have it done by tonight, and I'd love to have it back by Thursday or Friday to give me the weekend to revise. I realize it's a really short turnover, so if you can you will earn my everlasting thanks!! I would love a beta who is familiar with Haven.

Thank you!

Sure! I've been looking for some good Haven fic to fill in the gaposis that is this hiatus. Fair warning: I am currently moving, and lots of things will be happening in the next few days, but I will make a valiant effort at getting this back to you ASAP. I love Haven fic, and I think it really is important that your beta be familiar with the fandom, especially one this... underground haha. Send it on over when you're ready!

Thanks anyway! (And you should watch Dollhouse--it's darker and less well-executed than other Whedon works, but there's some really mind-blowing and fascinating parts amid the stuff Fox mucked up. I actually made my friend a list of episodes to watch without having to wade through the bad parts, if you want!)

How I Met Your Mother: Barney/Robin
Avengers: Hawkeye/Black Widow
Harry Potter: I will actually read any ship, but my favorites are as follows:
Ron/Hermione, Harry/Luna, Ginny/Neville, Severus/Lily, Sirius/Lily, James/Lily, Remus/anyone, Sirius/Bellatrix, Draco/Ginny
Is there any type of fiction you would prefer to avoid beta'ing? Not really. I'm down with most kinks and pretty much any ship in any fandom I listed (though the ones I listed are my favorites, as would be expected). Incest, non-con, etc, are all okay by me.
What are your strengths as a beta reader? Grammar/spelling, characterisation

I had a hell of a time trying to find a beta for this 'fic last year- so I'm dropping a note to ask.

I'm doing Doctor Who Three/Sarah Jane. I need someone who's at least passing in familiarity with Three's history and with new Who Ten era. It's AU in regards to Sarah's history. Roughly 4k of this story is already written, so in order to submit it it's going to be at least 30k when I'm done (hopefully). The finished product shouldn't have any warnings/graphic-ness unless I have a morbid epiphany halfway through.
whogate: JackRose whogate on May 15th, 2012 03:26 am (UTC)
If you don't find anyone else, I will volunteer. I am not real strong on characterization, but I am good at proofing grammar, punctuation, and spelling. I am still working my way through Classic Who, but I have seen all of New Who, and multiple episodes of the Third Doctor, so I am fairly familiar with Doctor Who cannon. I don't have any major squicks, so warnings and graphic-ness are okay.

Marvel/DC: Tony/Pepper, Steve/Any, Thor/Jane, Clint/Natasha, Bruce Wayne/Anyone but Rachel Dawes.

I don't have any major squickes but I prefer not to do RPF.

I am very strong in grammer and punctuation, and almost as strong in spelling.

Sure, I'd be happy to! I'm not involved in the Buffy fandom, but I've watched enough of the episodes and read enough fic to be pretty well acquainted with it and with Buffy's character (as long as you don't quiz me about what happened in which season :D). Are you mostly interested in characterization, or are there other areas that you want me to keep an eye out for? Feel free to send it to my email: livebrave224@gmail.com. I can get it back to you by Wednesday evening - will that work, or do you need it sooner?

Hello! I see you are the only other person on this board that knows Haven well, and I'm in the market for a beta. I'm planning on writing a Haven story set predominately in the future as Nathan pairs up with Audrey's reincarnation to fix the timeline they find themselves in (Audrey was supposed to be the last, but someone changed something they weren't supposed to). I haven't figured out all the details yet, but it's moving along in a good direction at the moment. Would you be interested in being my beta? I would love to have someone who appreciates the fandom as much as I do. :D

Sure! I'm also writing Haven for the Little Bang, so beta-ing a fellow Haven-er will put me in the mindset. :)

A couple of questions: 1) When would you like it back by? 2) What are you looking for in a beta: characterization, grammar, flow, sounding board, etc?

Feel free to send it to my email livebrave224@gmail.com with any instructions.

It depends on how thorough of a beta-ing you need. :) I'm madly trying to finish up my own fic, but I could give it a quick going over, but right now I don't have time to do anything too in depth. Would that be alright?

No need to worry about it, your fic needs you :)

When I didn't get a reply I went into panic mode and enlisted a f-lister to look it over for me SPaG-wise. However, if you get finished up earlier than you thought, I wouldn't say no having it read over for the story as my friend isn't in the fandom and it would be lovely to have someone who is let me know if everything is in character.

But yeah, priority should definitely be on your fic but thank you anyway :D

What are your strengths as a beta reader? I am a total perfectionist, so expect any fic I beta to be marked up with grammar and sentence structure corrections/suggestions. I really just want to make the reading experience flow smoothly. I also like to think I've got a good grasp of the charcters in my fandoms and can tell if they're going out of character.
What kind of turn around time can someone expect from you? Um... I admittedly kind of fail at this. It'll work really well if you give me a hard and fast deadline, but expect it quickly after the first week of June and before mid-September.

Hello,
I am looking for a beta for my Harry Potter fic, it's Severus/Hermione (which translates into having a hard time trying to find a beta) starting at the end of her fifth year and ends after the final battle. Nothing of a mature content happens till the end though the last few chapters give it a rating of NC-17. It's 27 (a little over 50K) chapters it is completed and I can send a summary if anyone is interested. You can either PM me or my email is: accio.potions.master at gmail dot com
